This digital publication brings together the lectures in ‘Maps of Africa. Reconfiguring a continent', a seminar organised to promote research and debate about the political and social realities of the African continent. Participating in the seminar were leading thinkers who, from the viewpoint of their different disciplines (politics, sociology, anthropology, journalism, demography and art), contributed to draw a map of the main challenges facing present-day African society. Far from reproducing recurrent Western ideas about the continent, this cycle focused on the complexity of forms (local, modern, foreign, traditional) that constitute the basis for a way forward to modernity. This seminar was organised by the CCCB, ARDA (Agrupament per la Docència i Recerca a l'Àfrica) and Laboratori per a la investigació de les societats africanes, with the collaboration of the Fundació CIDOB, the Fundació privada Collserola and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Spanish Agency for International Cooperation.
