Trailer of "Somorrostro en tres actes"
Marga Almirall Rotés
Somorrostro is the name currently given to a beach in Barcelona. In 1961 my grandfather went there with a super-8 camera and filmed the shantytown which, at that time, was gradually taking shape next to the sea: seagulls, children, dances and laundry hanging out to dry all seemed cinematic to him. Thirty years later, in 1991, the city was getting ready for the 1992 Olympics and once again my grandfather filmed in the same place, this time with a video camera, fascinated by the construction of the Mapfre tower blocks and the renovation of the seaside promenade.
Thirty more years have passed and, in 2022, discos and tourists are now crowding the sands. I've come to this place, where my grandfather filmed twice, to look for those who live there and to see how they inhabit the area today, searching for links with the archive. Somorrostro en tres actes combines three periods and three cinematographic formats in an attempt to reflect the changes undergone by the city of Barcelona in the past sixty years, as well as to capture the transformation of how we film.
