Some of the foremost film directors have catalysed urban geographies and the settings of our lives with their cameras. In their eyes, the city acquires an emotional dimension which elevates it to artificial spaces, interior spaces, infernal spaces or uninhabitable places; it also retrieves the spaces of memory, constructs spaces of reconciliation and materialises, if need be, contemporary forms of the non-place. Their gaze gives rise to the ghetto, violence, private lives lived in public places...
The catalogue of the exhibition The Film-maker's City offers a body of reflection on these mental and cinematographic transformations of the city and its inhabitants.
