The phenomena of suburbanisation and dispersion are approached here from different perspectives, placing the accent on aspects that are diverse, yet closely linked to each other. On the one hand, the more territorial and metropolitan views consider the dynamics of urban expansion and decentralisation, emphasising structural aspects of an economic, social and political type. Other contributions, in contrast, consider issues from the environmental dimension, making clear the incidence of the phenomena mentioned on urban ecosystems, given the indiscriminate occupation of the land and destructuring of the natural systems inherent to it. The role of urban planning and territory zoning is considered, lastly, in terms of possibilities for controlling processes that, in recent years, have seen a more than notable acceleration, not only in the English-speaking world but, also, in our Mediterranean cities and urban conurbations.
