Closing Session of “Radical Science”
Debate
Harvard professor and writer Naomi Oreskes speaks about the value of scientific knowledge in the twenty-first century in a session that opens with the premiere of a new and specifically made video by Hamill Industries and Maria Arnal, and closes with the launch of the collection of scientific poems Magmas.
“Radical Science”, the programme of scientific culture offered by the CCCB, the Institute of Photonic Sciences, the ALBA Synchrotron, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, the Institute of High Energy Physics, and the Research and Universities Department of the Catalan Government concludes with a splendid culminating event in which scientific knowledge engages with the arts and humanities.
This closing session begins with the premiere of Ciència radical (Radical Science), a new work by Hamill Industries with original music by Maria Arnal, which transports viewers from the macroscopic universe and general relativity to the microscopic scale and subatomic realms. This visual and sonorous journey of exploration is constructed from real experiments with in-camera effects and inspired by the artists’ visits to the research centres that have organised this project.
This will be followed by Naomi Oreskes, Henry Charles Lea Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University and international authority in the field of studying the relations between science and technology and society, who will speak about the value of scientific knowledge in the current social and political context, which is marked by disinformation and the rise of antiscientific trends. She will be presented by physicist, writer, and curator of this cycle of debates, Toni Pou, who will also moderate the following discussion.
The session ends with the launch of Magmes (Magmas), the collection of scientific poems published by Godall Edicions, which brings together poems resulting from Magmas: Poetry and Science as Alloy, the poetic residency programme which invited four contemporary poets—Anna Aguilar-Amat, Lluís Calvo, Mireia Casanyes, and Pol Vouillamoz—to spend the last few months immersed in the everyday existence of the four aforementioned pioneering research centres. Joan Duran, scientist, poet, and curator of this literary project will host this launch.
