Africa today is facing a conflict between tradition and an intense urban reality. This situation involves two different, perhaps opposing temporalities: a rural past which is set against the emergency of lively, often chaotic cities packed with contrasts.
In this context, artistic creation has emerged as one of the foremost exponents of an ambiguity in which social fabric and the historical and cultural bedrock are being shaken by a far-reaching transformation of living spaces.
The exhibition catalogue, Africas. The Artist and the City, combines the personal reflections and literary narrative of the curator, Pep Subirós, with texts about the lives and careers of the artists taking part in the exhibition and reproductions of works and photographs of the six cities it covers.
