Erice - Kiarostami. Correspondences
Erice and Kiarostami are probably two of the world’s most respected film-makers thanks to their integrity, the clear view presented by their movies, and their revolutionary gesture of returning to beginnings in order to keep advancing, while upholding a cinema that records what is happening in front of the camera as they delve deep into the roots of the earliest films to offer a lesson on the commitment to reality.
We started out from the hypothesis that a meeting of these two figures was possible. They both agreed enthusiastically and this exhibition will highlight the confluence of these two artists.
Curated by the French cinema critic Alain Bergala and the CCCB’s Exhibitions Director Jordi Balló, this show will contain specific material from the artists, notably including diverse photographic studies carried out on common subjects, such as children or signs on nature. The exhibition, however, also postulates a task of exchange and dialogue, like a filmed correspondence in which the two directors send each other sequences on their most immediate setting – one in Madrid and San Sebastián, and the other in Teheran and northern Iran – to build a new cinema reality in which the underlying meaning is only to be found within the framework of the exhibition itself. Other added possibilities are contemplated as well: for example, Erice - from a public school in Madrid -, and Kiarostami – from one in Teheran – work with children to make little unedited films, seeking to recover the unaffected naturality of a transparent gaze. We cannot be any more explicit about the exhibition’s final structure since both Víctor Erice and Abbas Kiarostami are reflecting on the best proposals in order to determine them in a meeting early in 2005.
Beyond all doubt, however, we are dealing with an absolutely original show of outstanding interest, one marked by an air of the rigour and brilliance of the two artists called to hold a dialogue in what is an unaccustomed place for them. Indeed, this exhibition will shape a dialogue that would be impossible if traditional cinema’s usual mechanism were applied.
