Orwell Day 2022

Rebecca Solnit

Writing, a gesture of hope

Debate

American writer and activist Rebecca Solnit talks with writer Bel Olid about the influence of George Orwell's work on her career as an essayist and reveals a new, more optimistic and hopeful look at the legacy of the writer of 1984.

Rebecca Solnit is one of the most renowned essayists on the international scene in recent years. In her work she discusses issues such as climate change, human rights or feminism from a viewpoint that has the ability to make the most ordinary things universal. In Orwell's Roses (published in Catalan and Spanish by Angle / Lumen, 2022), her latest book, Solnit discovers George Orwell's unknown vocation for the natural world and, from this new perspective, claims a more optimistic reading of his work that goes beyond dystopian and totalitarian landscapes and connects Orwell with issues such as desire, imagination or nature. This is an Orwell who opens cracks of hope and invites us to explore the present from these forms of resistance, which are also fundamental for freedom. Is there a place for pleasure and beauty in political writing?

Rebecca Solnit participate in the conversation by videoconference.
