Thinking about Varda’s Free Cinema
Debate
Following the publication of the essay Agnès Varda. Espigoladora de realitats i somnis [Agnès Varda: Gleaner of Realities and Dreams], the author, Imma Merino, talks with figures from film criticism and philosophy about Varda’s gaze.
In Agnès Varda: Gleaner of Realities and Dreams (in Catalan, Edicions de la Ela Geminada, 2024), Imma Merino condenses years of passion and study dedicated to one of the most influential directors in contemporary cinema. In this round table, Merino talks to film critics Carlos Losilla and Eulàlia Iglesias, and philosopher Laura Llevadot, about Varda and her work: her freedom in creating her own way of making films; her spirited gaze, always attuned to the realities of others, without turning her back on the expression of her own imagination; the search for new forms of representation by women.
The book, a seminal essay on Varda’s filmography and originally published in Spanish and Basque by Donostia Kultura and Euskadiko Filmategia in 2019, also contains the transcript of one of the last, most extensive interviews with Varda, in which the filmmaker talks to Merino about the origins of her work and her sources of inspiration.
