Thinking about Evolution Today

Drawing stories, explaining evolution

A conversation between illustration and science

Debate

In this session, three scientists and three illustrators will discuss three concepts associated with the theory of evolution, in their respective languages.

The boundaries between science and art are becoming more and more porous, and continuing to investigate them seems essential for outreach. Different languages can be used to present the same discourse, but they transmit it to us in different ways, expanding on the possibilities and forms of understanding. Here, with the help of the illustrators Marina Vidal, Anna Clemente and Marcelo Videla and the scientists Miriam Merenciano, Ignacio Maeso and David Castellano, we will explore three concepts associated with the theory of evolution using the storyboard format, a way of telling stories through images that explores alternative ways of communicating the same ideas.

What do we know about the theory of evolution? What can it tell us about our society and the human condition? What role can art play in its dissemination? What kind of thinking can storyboarding activate to help us reimagine our methods of practicing and communicating science?

This activity has been organised within the Barcelona Evolution Day programm and in the context of the international meeting EvoKE BCN 21, Evolution everywhere, which will take place in Barcelona from 22 to 24 November.
