SESSION 02: PUBLIC SQUARE

TAKING OVER THE SQUARE, CREATING WHAT IS PUBLIC: GUILLERMO ZAPATA + NICOLÁS SGUIGLIA + YAIZA HERNÁNDEZ / POPULAR SALON: RAÚL MINCHINELA / POLITICS OF THE COMMUNAL: JAVIER DE LA CUEVA + MIGUEL MOREY + BEATRIZ GARCÍA + DANIEL G. ANDÚJAR + MAGDA BANDERA

In this second session, Urgent! addresses the notion of the public square in the light of the dynamics set in motion by the 15th of March, in terms of the political and legal implications, on the Net: from the creative occupation of the square, from non-place to a place of collective decision-making, from the restoring of semantics to the articulating of policies… discussions, express talks and screenings make up this session.

6.15 p.m.: TAKING OVER THE SQUARE, CREATING WHAT IS PUBLIC

The 15th of March turned city squares into real, tangible places, material and emotional, a collective rejection of the omnipotence of the markets and a politics that is subsidiary to them; the city squares have become points of convergence between the social networks and the body social, symbols of the reappropriation and defence of the public in the physical space of the city. With Guillermo Zapata, scriptwriter, author of Crónicas del hype and member of El Patio Maravillas (Madrid), Nicolás Sguiglia, sociologist and member of the collective Universidad Nómada and La Casa Invisible (Malaga) and the researcher Yaiza Hernández.

A discussion with Guillermo Zapata and Nicolas Sguiglia. Chaired by Yaiza Hernández

7.30 p.m.: POPULAR SALON

The 15th of March had an immediate effect in a radical transformation of language, in thousands of posters and slogans, in our city squares, on the social networks and in countless demonstrations. Raúl Minchinela, a cultural critic and author of the audio-visual blog Reflexiones de Repronto, will analyse this phenomenon, which lies somewhere between speaking out and taking action, writing and virality, ingenuity and real-time commentary, critique and sense of humour.

An express talk with Raúl Minchinela

8.00 p.m.: POLITICS OF THE COMMUNAL

A turning point in recent political culture and at the same time the catalyst of a heterogeneous social agenda, the 15th of March outlines a new scenario for reflection on the communal, the public and the political. Javier de la Cueva, lawyer, veteran defender of copyleft, drafter of the basic document giving the sit-ins legal cover and a founder of Praeter Orwell, who works on the law of public data transparency, among other things; Miguel Morey, essayist and philosopher; Beatriz García, activist and researcher at the Observatorio Metropolitano (Madrid) and contributor to the new online medium Madrilonia; Daniel G. Andújar, artist, founder of projects such as Technologies To The People and Poscapital, and Magda Bandera, journalist and blogger.
