Understanding and Preventing Suicide

Round table with Aina Fernández Vidal, Salvador Simó and Cristian Segura

Debate

What circumstances lead people to want to put an end to their lives and how can we construct forms of solidarity to prevent this? Formulating this question means that we must discuss key issues in our society, for example the relationship between depression and factors of the milieu, the ways in which the mass media should report suicide, and how to care for people who are grieving over a suicide in their closest circles.

Although the Catalan suicide rate is one of the lowest in Europe, it is still the main cause of unnatural death among young people. Moreover, among people aged between forty and sixty the figures are rising. In recent years Catalonia has introduced new public norms with the aim of better monitoring and helping members of the population who are at risk, but a culture of detection and prevention must keep extending and, in order to achieve this, it is necessary to promote increasingly deeper understanding between families and the social services.
