Memories without a place
Aitor García Solé, Marta Marín-Dòmine and Queralt Solé Barjau
Debate
Aitor García Solé, who is head of the modernisation project at the Battle of the Ebro Museum in Faió, Queralt Solé Barjau, expert in historical memory, and Marta Marín-Dòmine, director of the Born Cultural Centre, speak with Miquel Berga about Civil War spaces of memory.
The Civil War and the Franco dictatorship were two of the most important events in contemporary Spanish history. However, there are no large museums that are concerned with explaining them to the new generations, and the history is dispersed and conserved in a range of museum institutions around the country. Neither is there any policy of shared historic memory, as there is in Argentina and Chile. In this session, we bring together specialists in the area to talk about museumisation of the Civil War and its place in collective memory.
The session will end with a reading of passages from Homenatge a Catalunya (La Magrana, 2023) by actresses Paula Vicente Mascó i Berta Cascante, to celebrate the publication of a new and complete Catalan translation of the text by Jordi Ainaud, in an edition that also includes Orwell's essay "Looking Back on the Spanish War" and an introduction by Miquel Berga.
