The tavernas of Athens and Thessalonica continue the ancient tradition of the rebetes, musicians who perform rebetika, the Greek blues with its roots in an earlier crisis than ours but with lots of similarities. This is a form of music that opposes power with the verses of its songs and which, now as then, is associated with a trend of rebellion rather than passive conformism.
