Daniele Mencarelli and Anna Ballbona

Between judgment and madness

Debate

Free

On the occasion of the Catalan Book Week, the Italian writer Daniele Mencarelli, finalist of the Strega Prize and winner of the Strega Giovani, talks with the writer Anna Ballbona about the most human dimension of mental suffering.

When he was twenty years old, the writer Daniele Mencarelli was hospitalized for a week in a mental health institution after suffering a violent psychotic break. In Tutto chiede salvezza (published in Catalan by Segona Perifèria, 2022), the author captures this experience, an experience that changed him forever. A book dedicated to the "madmen of all times, swallowed up by the asylums of history", but also to the doctors "who put science in the hands of love". In this conversation, Mencarelli talks about how traditional medicine has treated mental illnesses and about the consequences that this, today, continues to have for patients.

This conversation takes place at the stage 2 of the Moll de la Fusta in Barcelona as part of the 40th edition of the Catalan Book Week, which is held from September 9 to 18.

Participants: Daniele Mencarelli, Anna Ballbona
