Animate Earth
Stephan Harding
Debate
NOW addresses the ecology debate, placing particular emphasis on systemic approaches that demonstrate the complex interdependence of all living systems and encouraging ideas, projects and actions that seek to overcome nihilistic or catastrophist stances.
This lecture explores what it is in the western world view that has led our culture to be so destructive with its environment. We will also see how it is possible to develop a relation with nature based on a formal science that teaches us to observe the Earth as a living being and not simply as a dead, inert mechanism. Using examples from the Gaia theory, based on dynamic interactions between the air, the oceans, the rocks and all living beings, we will find out how to develop a profound sense of belonging to an animate Earth. Finally, we will consider how these perceptions can be used to establish a truly sustainable relation between ourselves and the “not just human” world around us.
