In the margins of Europe

Turkey, at the margins of Europe

Lectures by Zeynep Oral and Elif Shafak

Europe and Turkey are undergoing simultaneous crises of values. The rise of right-wing populism and a revival of intolerance, xenophobia and censorship demarcate a game of reciprocally exchanged glances revealing the weaknesses of both projects yet, at the same time, suggesting the potential for mutual transformation. The events of recent months, especially the attempted coup d’état against the Ankara government and the EU-Turkey refugee deal, highlight the need to think about the relations between these two worlds which resist coming together.

In these lectures the basic elements of the struggle against post-democratic authoritarianism will be discussed, in addition to the role of women and feminist organisations in Turkey in constructing ways of moving on from the conflicts of both yesterday and today.
