Mery Cuesta

Doctor of Communication, cultural critic, exhibition curator and teacher.

As a critic, she contributes to the newspapers La Vanguardia and “La esfera de papel” of El Mundo, and works at Radio Nacional de España (“Efecto Doppler” on Radio3 and “El ojo crítico” on RNE1). She has curated some 30 exhibitions about popular culture and outsider art, including Quinquis de los 80: Cine, prensa y calle (La Casa Encendida, Alhóndiga Bilbao, CCCB), Bálsamo y Fuga: La creación artística en la institución penitenciaria (CaixaForum), El arte irreductible: Espejismos del art brut (Prisión Modelo Espai Memorial), and Humor absurdo: Una constelación del disparate en España (Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo). She was curator of the Catalan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2017. She also develops curatorial projects that adopt diverse formats, such as “Sintonía Radiante: Interferencias entre Arte, Magia y Ciencia” at Matadero Madrid. She is the Director of the Master’s degree in Illustration and Visual Narrative (ELISAVA), and researcher and associate lecturer in Contemporary Art in the Faculty of Audiovisual Communication (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). In 2019 she was awarded the Graffica Prize for her “dedication to the critical dissemination of popular and underground visual culture”, to quote the Jury. Her most recently published essay is Humor absurdo (Ed. Astiberri).
