Maria Serrat
Maria Serrat i Martín has a degree in Humanities, specialising in Cultural Management, from the International University of Catalonia and a Diploma in Company Administration and Management from the ESADE Business School. She is presently completing a PhD in Human, Social and Legal Sciences.
She began her professional career working in the Mataró City Council where she was Managing Director of the Municipal Health Institute. In 1990 the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia appointed her Manager of the Catalan Women’s Institute where she was engaged in establishing and developing this entity. Since 1999 she has been Director General of the Liceu Conservatory Foundation. A notable part of her work as a researcher and publicist is represented by the publication of her book Els ensenyaments musicals a Catalunya 1996-2002 (Music Teaching in Catalonia, 1996 – 2002), which is the first study to be published in Catalonia with data and statistics from the educational map of music teaching in Catalonia. She has also written numerous articles and given a great number of lectures related with art teaching and its implications for culture. At present, she is on the Board of Governors of Art Education (a state-level consultative organ concerned with art teaching, which was created by the Organic Education Law) as well as being Vice-President of the Spanish Association of Art Education Centres – ACESEA) and a member of the Board of the National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia – JONC). Moreover, she is a member of the Catalan Music Council and of the Advisory Board of the Catalan Coordinator of Foundations, among other official positions.
