Ivan Krastev

Political scientist

Ivan Krastev is a political scientist, president of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia (Bulgaria), and Permanent Fellow of the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna. He is also a founding board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group of London. From 2005 to 2011, he was editor-in-chief of the Bulgarian edition of Foreign Policy. Among his publications are the books In Mistrust We Trust: Can Democracy Survive When We Don’t Trust Our Leaders? (TED Books, 2013), Democracy Disrupted: The Politics of Global Protest (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2014), After Europe (Penn University Press, 2017). Later on he has published The Light that Failed. A Reckoning (Penguin, 2019; with Stephen Holmes), an essay on the crisis of modern liberalism. His articles have been published in The International New York Times, El País and the magazine Ctxt.
