Claudio Barría

Marine biologist

Claudio Barría has a doctorate in Sea Sciences and is an eminent marine biologist. He teaches at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and is Scientific Director of the Catsharks Association for the Study and Conservation of Elasmobranchs, (ICM-CSCIC). He is also a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in the group of experts on sharks and rays. He has specialised in several fields, including the feeding of these species, biologging, biological oceanography, analysis of stable isotopes, taxonomy, and natural resource management.

He devotes his time and efforts to understanding the ecology of sharks and rays, as well as the use of habitat by elasmobranchs within ecosystems. He also studies anthropogenic impact affecting populations of these species. His valuable contributions to the study and conservation of sharks and rays have led to his becoming a key figure of research into these fascinating sea creatures.
