Anne Carson
Poet
Considered one of the most important contemporary poets according to literary critics, Anne Carson is also an essayist, translator and professor of classical and comparative literature at the University of Michigan. Her work stands out for its fusion of styles, references and formats, and she is particularly interested in the hybridization between the Greco-Latin, medieval and contemporary poetic traditions. After abandoning her studies twice at St. Michael's College in Toronto and devoting herself for a few years to the visual arts, Carson finally graduated from St. Andrews, Scotland, and in 1985 published her thesis on Sappho, translated and published in Spanish under the title Eros, dulce y amargo (Lumen, 2020). Her latest book published in Catalan is Decreació (Vaso Roto Ediciones, 2023), translated by Núria Busquet Molist into Catalan and by Jeannette L. Clariond into Spanish. Here, Carson reclaims Simone Weil's term to describe the dissolution of the self in a book that dialogues with French mystical philosophy. Another of his most famous works is La bellesa del marit (Vaso Roto Ediciones, 2023), a poetic essay that tells the story of how a marriage is sinking. Also noteworthy are his works Hombres en sus horas libres (Pre-Textos, 2007), Autobiografía de rojo (Pre-Textos, 2016) and Flota (Cielo Eléctrico, 2020), all translated by Jordi Doce, and the text Possessive Used as Drink (Me): A Lecture on Pronouns in the Form of Fifteen Sonnets. Carson has also collaborated with artists such as Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed and visual artist Kim Anno. In 2020 she was awarded the Princesa de Asturias Prize and is a regular nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
