Andreu Palou

Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Balearic Islands University.

He began his academic career at the University of Barcelona but soon moved to the UIB where he was appointed as a professor in 1987. He has worked in different capacities at this university, as head of the departments of Biochemistry and Basic Biology, as Dean of the Science Faculty, and vice-rector of Teaching Staff and Research. Since 1995 he has been director of the General Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology. His research interests, on which he has published widely, are regulation of body weight, the relationship between diet and epigenetics, food security and identification of healthy properties of foodstuffs. He has been president of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Security and Nutrition (AESAN) and vice-president of the scientific panel on Nutrition of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
