Timothy Snyder

The habit of freedom

Debate

On the occasion of the publication of his latest book On Freedom (2024 – in Spanish, Sobre la Libertad, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2024), the renowned thinker and historian Timothy Snyder analyses the evolution of threats to individual and collective freedom in a situation marked by the rise of authoritarianisms.

The present crisis of western democracies, involving the Russian occupation of Ukraine, increasing authoritarian discourse, and deterioration of the public debate, highlights the need to rethink the concept of freedom. Timothy Snyder describes how the idea is often perceived from an individualistic standpoint, and understood as an absence of external constraints, or as a condition that is automatically given by the capitalist system. Through the work of philosophers, political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers, and his own experience, Snyder, one of the most influential intellectuals in the United States, responds to this situation by proposing a relational view of freedom. He explores the concept as a presence of commitments, and as an essential virtue for good governance, for thriving, and taking risks collectively in shaping futures.

The event will be presented and moderated by Xavier Mas de Xaxàs, journalist and diplomatic correspondent of the daily La Vanguardia.
