Timothy Snyder

Expert on the history of contemporary Europe

Richard C. Levin Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna where he heads the “United Europe – Divided Memory” project. Timothy Snyder, a leading expert on European history, is one of the most eminent intellectuals in the Anglo-Saxon world. He has made significant contributions to the historiography of Europe, especially with his work on the Holocaust, the Second World War, and totalitarian regimes, for which he has received awards from the Václav Havel Foundation and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as state orders and decorations from the governments of Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland. He has broad knowledge of Eastern European languages, including Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Yiddish, and his books have been published in approximately forty languages. His most recent publications reveal a critical view of the contemporary world, as is the case with On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century (2017 – in Catalan, Sobre la tirania: 20 lliçons que hem d’aprendre del segle XX, Destino, 2017), The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America (2018 – in Spanish, El camino hacia la no Libertad, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2018), and On Freedom (2024 – in Spanish, Sobre la Libertad, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2024). His essay Our Malady: Lessons in Liberty from a Hospital Diary (2020 – in Catalan, La nostra malaltia, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2020) is about the right to health in the United States while, notable among his prolific historiographic output are Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin (2010 – in Spanish, Tierras de sangre: Europa entre Hitler y Stalin, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2011), winner of the 2013 Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought, and Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning (2015 – in Spanish, Tierra negra. El Holocausto como historia y advertencia, Galaxia Gutenberg, 2015). He is a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The New York Times Review of Books, and The Guardian.
