Street of Shame (Akasen Chitai)
Kenji Mizoguchi
1956 / Japan / 35 mm / 85 min / OV with English and Catalan subtitles
Five months before he died, Mizoguchi released his last film, Street of Shame, a brave and empathetic look at the world of prostitution without being paternalistic. Whether to earn money to keep their families or as a livelihood, the prostitutes at Dreamland deal with their profession as best they can. Mizoguchi creates a shared story that gives a voice to the prostitutes and takes their viewpoints into account to portray them as more than mere sexual objects.
With the collaboration of Filmoteca Española.
