Workshop on Non-Human Writing with Anna Dot

Courses and workshops

In the company of the artist Anna Dot, we’ll learn to observe how natural elements can communicate with us by means of non-human writing.

The artist starts with a personal experience: one day during a drought, crossing a bridge, she noticed the bed of a dry river and saw that the stones, over time, had been marked by the water. These marks looked like sentences written in an unknown alphabet that the river itself had been writing for centuries.

This workshop invites us to reflect on how nature give rise to marks and traces, creating a writing without words but full of meaning. This phenomenon is known as asemic writing, a kind of language that doesn’t follow a human alphabet, but becomes another way of communicating. Anna Dot will accompany us to explore the landscape near at hand, where we’ll look for signs or clues of these non-human writings. By observing elements of our surroundings, we’ll discover how, over time, nature records and reveals an invisible narrative.
