Viva Varda!

Looking at (Ourselves) Animals

Manifesto for a human-animal filmic relation, with Xiana do Teixeiro

Courses and workshops

Agnès Varda repeatedly represented the lives, routines and personalities of her cats. In the present-day context of creation and circulation of images on the internet, we are constantly sharing pictures of “kitties” and other non-human animals. In this workshop, filmmaker Xiana do Teixeiro invites us to write a manifesto of animal gaze-relation.

How is the way we look at cats on the Internet similar to the way we look at other humans, or ourselves? We are animals looking at other animals. We are also animals establishing relations of projection, relations with screens. If the screen is always a mirror, how do we relate to the cat images we consume? If this is the image that domesticates (us), what is the image that frees (us)?

Xiana do Teixeiro invites us to review the path of Agnès Varda by constructing a manifesto: we will draw up lists of ways of looking, share tools to dismantle them, and discuss issues such as intimacy, will, curiosity, affect and refuge, all commonplaces in the animal condition that are raised by the theme of the gaze.

Participants: Xiana do Teixeiro, Drac Màgic
