L'Alternativa 2024

31th Barcelona Independent Film Festival

Audiovisuals + Festivals

The Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa, is now in its 31st year. For over three decades it’s been promoting creative independence, diversity, innovation, freedom, commitment and thought-provoking reflection, with the CCCB as its indispensable main venue, alongside the Filmoteca de Catalunya and Maldà cinemas. This year the Festival will hold events onsite at the CCCB from the 14th to the 22nd of November.

Once again, l'Alternativa's programme features well-known works and figures from the world of film as well as newcomers and more recent discoveries. The Festival has three official competition sections: International Feature Films, International Short Films and Spanish Films.

The 31st l'Alternativa will hold a retrospective of the Mexican filmmaker Nicolás Pereda, a renowned participant of the Festival, who’ll present his latest work and also hold a talk with the audience, as well as giving a practical workshop on Epistolary Films. Satellite sessions will focus on three leading professionals from Spanish cinema, such as the filmmaker Isaki Lacuesta, who’ll also give the masterclass entitled “Retrat/Relat” (Portrait/Story), the visual artist and animation filmmaker Isabel Herguera, who’ll also take part with a masterclass on her creative process as well as giving a Film School session, and Mauro Herce, director of photography. There will also be Sneak Previews of the best independent cinema, such as the latest work by Nicolas Philibert, who visited the Festival last year, Serguei Loznitsa and Anna Cornudella.

L'Alternativa Hall boasts a multidisciplinary, participatory programme that combines free screenings with discussions, acting as a meeting point for the Festival while, alongside the screenings, l'Alternativa Activities offers seminars, masterclasses, round tables, family workshops and Film School sessions.

L’Alternativa Pro is holding its 15th edition and the Cinema Pendent call, running several events to boost the development of projects currently in production.

John Lurie has provided the music for l’Alternativa 2024’s teaser. The musician, actor and painter has called the video I’m a Doggy, an uplifting film that transports us to those moments of freedom and relaxation in which time itself seems to unwind.

What’s more, in line with its commitment to promote and support the work of cineastes who’ve taken part in previous years, l’Alternativa also helps to raise awareness of the films selected beyond the Festival itself.
