When Arati, a young Indian woman, decides to look for work to help her family economically, everything seems to go against her. No-one approves of a married women with children bringing home a wage instead of looking after her family. Only her husband decides to give her permission for the good of the family economy. Behind the serene portrait of everyday life constructed by Satyajit Ray is the story of a woman who refuses to submit to the patriarchal conservatism of the society she lives in.
