Juan Arnau

Matter as imagination

Debate

Philosopher Juan Arnau talks with physicist and science journalist Toni Pou, about the five elements and the relationship between imagination and matter.

The first mentions of the elements appear in both Greece and India in the 6th century BC. In both traditions we find the idea of the universe as a great organism that perceives and feels. This consciousness is related to the elements and to our own sensibility. Each element is linked to one of the senses of the great cosmic organism, which the small organisms reproduce. Space or ether is hearing; air, touch; fire, sight; water, taste; earth, smell. To cultivate this sensibility offers us an alternative to the cult of technology and the dominant algorithm of the scientific imagination, showing us the way to a new culture of the Earth.
