Girlhood (Bande de filles)*
Céline Sciamma
2014 / France / DCP / 113 min / OV with Spanish subtitles
Girlhood tells the story of Marieme, an adolescent who wants to break free from an oppressive family and school background by joining a gang of girls who break all the rules. Girlhood is, above all, a story of personal discovery, learning, independence, and what it means to be young and black. After her acclaimed Tomboy, Céline Sciamma, aware of the difficulties and obstacles facing her characters, made a film committed to adolescent girls and districts on the French city limits that is not without tenderness.
