D'A Film Festival

Audiovisuals

The Barcelona D’A Film Festival is now in its seventh edition, consolidating its support for independent auteur film and bringing the city’s public the best in contemporary cinema.

D’A 2017 opens on 27 April with the premiere in Catalonia of Lady Macbeth, directed by William Oldroyd and starring Florence Pugh. The advance programme of D'A 2017 includes the premieres in Spain of Bitter Money by Chinese director Wang Bing, Prize for the Best Screenplay at Venice 2016; the new film from Canadian Denis Côté, Boris sans Beatrice, launched at the Berlinale 2016, and The Fixer by Romanian director Adrian Sitaru, a powerful film about prostitution.

Another outstanding title in the festival is Bertrand Bonello’s Nocturama, a poignant portrait of youth today, between politics, revolution and mass consumption, and, as ever, masterly use of soundtrack. It also features the premiere in Catalonia of Matías Piñeiro’s new film Hermia & Helena, presented at the last Locarno festival; The Student by Kirill Serebrennikov, another example of the force of Russian cinema; and Personal Shopper by Olivier Assayas, a ghost story with Kristen Stewart, which tied for the Best Director at Cannes 2016.

One of the flagships of D'A is the Talents section, devoted to newcomers with fewer than three films under their belt, and the festival’s only competitive section. It includes debuts such as Godless by Bulgarian director Ralitza Petrova (winner of over 20 prizes at international festivals, including the Golden Leopard at Locarno) and El futuro perfecto by Argentine Nele Wohlatz (Best First Feature at Locarno); In Bed with Victoria, the new film by Justine Triet, starring Virginie Efira, new talent Vincent Lacoste (Hipócrates) and Melvil Poupaud; and the Japanese Harmonium by Koji Fukada (Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2016).

“Un impulso colectivo” (A collective impulse) is a section devoted to the latest batch of Spanish directors emerging on the fringes of the industry, who produce their films totally independently and are shaking up the cinema scene in this country. This edition, we’ll be presenting Demonios tus ojos by Pedro Aguilera, which had its world premiere at Rotterdam 2017; La película de nuestra vida by Enrique Baró, and Sipo Phantasma by Koldo Almandoz, also presented at Rotterdam. This section is curated by Carlos Losilla.

Rounding off this sneak preview of D'A 2017 is a tribute to Abbas Kiarostami, with a showing of his last short film, Take me home, and the documentary 76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Abbas Kiarostami by Seyfolah Samadian, and a new collaboration with the CCCB’s Xcèntric programme in the form of the presentation of The Human Surge by Eduardo Williams, an Argentinian filmmaker resident in Paris, winner of the Golden Leopard in the Cineasti del presente section at Locarno 2016.

The sessions of the Barcelona D'A Film Festival will be held at Aribau Club 1 and 2 cinemas, the Teatre del CCCB, the Filmoteca de Catalunya, and the SGAE Foundation in Catalonia.
