Kené Art Workshop
Courses and workshops
In this workshop, artists Olinda Silvano and Cordelia Sánchez invite us to explore the practice and meaning of Kené art, an artistic expression that is deeply rooted in the culture of the Shipibo-Conibo people of the Peruvian Amazon jungle.
Kené is not just an aesthetic art. According to the beliefs of the Shipibo-Conibo people, it also has healing properties. Its designs reflect the watercourses and the symbolic journeys that unite human beings, spirits, animals and objects. Each geometric pattern represents a song and the transmission of knowledge and power from one generation to the next.
In this workshop, participants will explore the technique and the meaning behind these designs, using paints made from natural pigments. They will immerse themselves in the cosmology of the Shipibo-Conibo people and learn how Kené art acts as a bridge between the visual and the spiritual. They’ll also explore how the geometric patterns convey the energy of power plants through different mediums, such as the body, cloth and clay.
