What is known about brain ageing and therapies to prevent it? Opening lecture in the ICREA-CCCB Debates series, “Is Ageing a Disease?”, by Miguel Chillón, ICREA research professor at the Institut de Neurociències at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (INc) and at the Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR – Vall d’Hebron Research Institute).

Ageing, a complex biological process entailing progressive functional decline of the organism, is particularly important when it affects the brain. At advanced ages some people have memory lapses or suffer from dementia, while others maintain their cognitive capacities. Why? What kinds of interventions are presently being worked on in order to understand the mechanisms involved in brain ageing and, accordingly, to influence their development?
