Amazonia, Placing Life at the Centre

A morning with Eliane Brum

Education

Free with pre-booking

Brazilian journalist Eliane Brum defends the central role of Amazonia in radically transforming the way we think and relate to the environment.

From the heart of the Amazon rainforest, Eliane Brum, one of the most prominent and courageous voices in journalism and environmental activism, defends the need for a radical change in our way of thinking about our relationship with what we call “nature” and of conceiving of ourselves as a species. For her, it is not possible to address the climate crisis with the same thinking that gave rise to it. The future depends on it. On our ability to generate new knowledge and even new words and alternative ways of thinking to the dominant model. What keys can the Amazon give us to face these challenges? What can we learn from peoples who have not become separated from nature?

Eliane Brum has dedicated the last few decades to exposing the interests behind the climate crisis and its effects on the Amazon and the world. Seven years ago, the journalist went to live in the very centre of the jungle. On what she regards as the most important front of what she calls the climate war. In her latest book, La Amazonia. Viaje al centro del mundo (Salamandra, 2024), Brum highlights the central role of the Amazon in facing the urgent challenge of radically rethinking who we are and how we relate to the environment.

The session will have a pedagogical dossier (in Catalan) so that the students can work on the contents beforehand in the classroom and thus make the most out of the lecture.
