A Morning with Alec MacGillis

Living in the shadow of Amazon

Education

The investigative journalist Alec MacGillis will talk about today’s consequences of a digital economy in the hands of technological giants like Amazon.

Technology has facilitated an irruption of services that make life easier: we can get everything we want with a single click on a mobile phone. But given the massive expansion of technological giants like Google, Facebook, and Amazon, it is also necessary to think about how their economic model is transforming society. Alec McGillis, who has studied the impact of Amazon in the United States, explains how its expansion is having a huge impact on the social and urban fabrics of cities. What role do we users play in this new reality? What are the consequences of this digital economy?

The investigative journalist Alec MacGillis—whose book Fulfillment: Winning and Losing in One-Click America has just appeared in Catalan (A l’ombra d’Amazon: Una història del nostre futur, Edicions del Periscopi, 2022) and also in Spanish, published by Península—travelled the United States, investigating the phenomenon of Amazon and collecting testimonies from dozens of people who have been affected by its influence. In this session for adolescents, he will speak about how the so-called click era can transform society.
