A Conversation With Trans Artists and Activists Fox & Owl and Diego Marchante

Trans Perspectives: a Debate on Gender, Art and Politics

We open the videoart show “Transitions” with a conversation on gender, art and politics featuring the British trans filmmakers, artists and activists Fox Fisher & Owl, and the Barcelona-based artist and activist Diego Marchante.

Trans people have never had so much visibility as now, either in the media or in everyday life, but this public presence has not always been translated into a critical or emancipatory perspective. The debate about gender diversity has been enormously enriched and the binary man-woman reduction is starting to founder everywhere but trans bodies are still being presented in the media from a pathologising viewpoint or one that stigmatises difference.

Fox Fisher & Owl and Diego Marchante will talk about how today’s media, cinema and literature represent trans people and everyone else who does not conform to the prevailing binary gender division. They will also speak about productions halfway between art and activism which resist these dominant representations.

The videoart show “Transitional States: Hormones at the Crossroads of Art and Science” brings together work by fourteen artists and collectives in the form of audiovisual pieces concerning hormones, gender identity and medicine.
