Transitional States. Hormones at the Crossroads of Art and Science

The “Transitions” public discussions speakers will focus on "bodies in transit", bodies that escape and defy categories and norms. They will especially deal with experiences that do not fit into the binary male-female system, thus drawing attention to the limits of what is considered ‘normal’ today.
That the body can no longer be seen as a predetermined biological entity with fixed, inalterable features would seem to be an increasingly accepted reality. This also applies to the “male” and “female” categories that have traditionally been used to define sexual and gender identity, thus reducing a much broader spectrum of possibilities to a normalising binary system. In this lecture cycle, speakers will discuss the processes of subjectivation and the binary gender system, the limits of what scientific and medical discourse deem to be ‘normal’, and practices and policies affecting people who do not conform to the binary system of gender assignment. They will also describe how different gender technologies, from hormone therapy to sexual reassignment techniques, are paving the way for a new plasticity which radically contributes towards dismantling the binary gender system and opening up an array of new questions about the politics of identity in today’s society.
This series of public discussions is part of the project “Transitional States: Hormones at the Crossroads of Art and Science” (an initiative of the Transitional States project at the University of Lincoln), which will also feature a videoart installation at the CCCB from the 4th to the 28th of October.
