Urban Nature

A walk-through film by Rimini Protokoll

Mannheim / Kunsthalle Mannheim

In July 2022 the exhibition URBAN NATURE by Rimini Protokoll arrived at Kunsthalle, in Mannheim, after being inaugurated at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània in Barcelona.

URBAN NATURE is the latest production by the author-director team Rimini Protokoll, which realizes exhibition and theatre projects internationally. The Kunsthalle Mannheim is hosting the multimedia and interactive exhibition project in cooperation with the National Theater Mannheim.

Rimini Protokoll is composed since 2000 from Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel. Their work is renowned for realizing internationally successful exhibitions and theatre projects which often imply a playful use of technology. Their exhibitions took place in institutions all around the world such as the Heidelberger Kunstverein, the Albertinum in Dresden, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Royal Academy of Arts London, and the Brooklyn Museum New York. “Urban Nature” is the result of a successful long-term collaboration with scenographer Dominic Huber.

“Urban Nature” focuses on offering immersive experiences in urban spaces characterized by different economic conditions. The public is invited to observe and live the true stories several people such as: an investment advisor, a prison guard, a child, or a young woman who has lived on the street. This way, the exhibition questions the way natural resource management is handled and it opens important issues as the right to decent housing, the expansion of new economies and work models, inequalities between neighbours and the way younger generations see the urban future.

In this representation, Rimini Protokoll reworks its own technique of simultaneous performance: a temporary architecture, neatly fitted together, in which each visitor, almost in passing, becomes an actor for the other individuals present in the space, while showing us we are not alone and how our private live decisions affect the public sphere.
