“Walls, fences, fortified enclaves, graffiti and pichações make up a certain kind of public space where signs of inequality and social tension are unmistakeable. Gestures of abandonment of the public in favour of private, protected spaces coexist with gestures that transgressively reappropriate the public in order to inscribe on it marks that express social inequality. In this context, however, social tensions and inequalities are not expressed and negotiated by conventional political language.”
