Yuk Hui

Computer engineer and philosopher of technology

Yuk Hui is one of the most influential thinkers in philosophy of technology today. With a PhD from Goldsmith College, London, he is Professor of Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he holds the Chair of Human Conditions. He is a jury member for the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture and is founder and convener of the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology, an international research network that explores the relationship between philosophy and technology from different global and historical perspectives.

Drawing on Eastern thinking and the European philosophical tradition, Hui offers a renewed vision of the relationship between technology and culture by means of the concepts of cosmotechnics and technodiversity. Several of his books have been translated into Spanish, among them, On the existence of digital objects, 2016 (in Spanish, Sobre la existencia de los objetos digitales, Materia Oscura, 2023), Recursivity and contingency, 2019 (in Spanish, Recursividad y contingencia, Caja Negra, 2022), and Fragmentar el futuro ("Fragment the future", Caja Negra, 2020). In his most recent book, Art and cosmotechnics (University of Minnesota Press, 2021), he addresses the challenge posed by technological transformation in art and philosophy. His forthcoming book Machine and sovereignty will be published by University of Minnesota Press in 2024.
