Vicky Benítez

Artist and teacher

Vicky Benítez (1975) has taught at secondary school since 2017. Formerly, she spent twelve years working as a professional gardener. She is a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Barcelona with a master’s degree in Advanced Studies in Design (2013-2015) specialising in Art Direction and Design from the same university. Her years as a professional gardener complement her art practices as she uses the official lists of invasive exotic plants to study the concepts of non-native species, weeds, undergrowth and blight, and explore the names given to living things according to the economic benefits they generate. She has participated in several collective exhibitions: Swab Seeds 2020 showing El triomf de la por together with Maslow Industries and La Trastera (October 2020), L'art en estat d'alarma at the Cumprativa de Llorenç del Penedès (August 2020),  Polítiques del sòl, curated by Christian Alonso at the Centre d'Art Maristany (December 2019-March 2020); Memoria y reivindicación, curated by Ramón Sicart at the Cumprativa de Llorenç (August 2019); Bipolítiques 2+1+1, at EAM, curated by Aureli Ruiz (Lleida, November 2017); La revolució és una ficció. La ficció és una revolució, at EINA, curated by Joan M. Minguet (November 2017).
