Microbiologist an academic director of the Academia Europaea-Barcelona Knowledge Hub
He is a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1980) and at the University of Barcelona (1988) and was president of the Catalan Biology Society from 1989 to 1993. He has been a leading researcher in Catalonia and Spain in the field of microbial ecology and, in particular, with his risk evaluation work with regard to introducing genetically manipulated microorganisms into the environment, the sulphur cycle in nature, communities of phototropic bacteria in lakes of karstic origin, microbial tapestries, and the production of certain bacteria of biodegradable plastics. Notable among his studies are those on prokaryotic communities of the karstic system of the Pla d’Estany, and on the structure and physiology of bacterial tapestries of the Ebro Delta.
