Mercedes Álvarez

Filmmaker and lecturer. Her first feature film, The Sky Turns (2005), won international awards including the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Festival, the Grand Prix from the Cinéma du Réel in Paris, the Infinity Festival award in Alba (Italy) and the International Critics, Jury, Audience and Best Film awards at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), among others. Her next feature film, Mercado de futuros [Futures Market] (2011), received a special mention at BAFICI and won the New Looks award at Visions du Réel (International Film Festival Nyon). Álvarez has exhibited video installations in the Venice Biennale and at the CCCB and the Palau Robert in Barcelona, and she is the author of the poem-essay Cinco elementos para cualquier universo [Five Elements for Any Universe] (2012). She is a professor for the Master in Creative Documentary at Pompeu Fabra University.
