Marta Grimalt Canals
Video artist and film director
Marta Grimalt Canals (Palma, 1989) is a video artist and film director. Her works are labyrinthine visual compositions that lead to dimensions beyond the banalities of everyday life, helping us to discover ourselves within the possible individual perception. She works with elements from photography, fashion, the plastic arts and drawing, creating films by combining effects produced both manually and digitally.
She graduated in Film Direction and Production at the Escola de Cinema de Barcelona (ECIB), 2013, took a Master in Film Art Direction at the Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC), 2014 and also studied Super 8 Documentary Film at the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles, 2016.
Her work has been shown at the Filmoteca de Catalunya and Centre d'Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona, Círculo de Bellas Artes and Cineteca in Madrid, San Telmo Museoa in San Sebastian, Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani in Palma, CONARTE Centro de las Artes in Monterrey, Mexico and The Roxy Theater in Missoula, USA. Recently she was one of the winners of the Certamen Art Jove, Balearic Islands, 2020, with video art filmed in Super 8, Violència, assot costumista. Her first feature-length experimental art film, Desierto en tu mente, is a surrealist road movie shot in Super 8 and black and white, using locations in California, Barcelona and Mallorca. For this independent production she was supported as artist-in-residence at L'Estruch in Sabadell, 2017, as well as being backed by the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles and the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics. The film is distributed online by Filmin.
