LOCUS*

Based in Madrid’s vulnerable Puente de Vallecas district, Locus* occupies the space where culture meets community mental health. They subvert the concept of “place of safety”—in mainstream psychiatry, related to police and health custody—using contemporary creative languages and calling for coexistence with madness on the basis of mutual support. It is produced by the cultural association Nada Colectivo and managed by a young, multicultural and transdisciplinary driving team living with psychic suffering: Ana CSC (Vallecas, 1993), Francesca Alessandro (Catania, 1990) and Iris Sofía (Agadir, 1995).

The project is a pioneer in the Spanish territory for "Mad Culture". From 2019 to the present, it receives the main support from entities such as Medialab Prado, Fundación "la Caixa", Madrid Salud, La Casa Encendida, the Ministry of Culture and Sport, the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training or the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Now, through the workshop 'This tarot is a safe space', Locus* collaborates with the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona.

Those of the original Mad Pride inspire the main objectives of Locus*. They aim to de-stigmatize mental health problems, generate connections between those who live this experience firsthand, and encourage their emancipation as valuable members of society. Finally, they seek to awaken creative/cultural interest to understand and deal with mental health issues away from hyper-medicalization.
