Júlia Barbany
Hybrid performer and stage designer, she places her work in irony and the limits of performativity, which she calls “soft”. The main themes of her work are humour, reflection on the performative act, and the aesthetics of failure. She is a member of Las Huecas, a cross-breed stage collective in permanent retreat. A graduate of Barcelona’s Institut del Teatre, in 2019 she did a Master’s in Live Arts and Performance at the University of Helsinki, where she began her career as a performer.
Barbany has been an artist-in-residence at the Graner centre for dance and live-arts creation. Her current role there is assistant and art director for outside projects, and as performer for the Societat Doctor Alonso company (Ibero-American Theatre Festival, Cádiz, 2024). She is in the process of creating Sobre l’amistat (On friendship) – the latest work by Las Huecas (Temporada Alta festival, Girona, 2023) – and is part of the educational team at the MACBA, where she leads workshops on performance art.
