Joanna Quinn

Animator

Trained at Goldsmiths College London and Middlesex University, Joanna Quinn discovered the magic of hand-drawn animation by adapting her extraordinary talent for drawing into fluid, dynamic and lively animations. In 1985 he founded the independent studio Beryl Productions in Wales with his partner Les Mills as producer, screenwriter and sound designer. His short films and commercials have won over 90 awards worldwide, including four BAFTAs, three Emmys and two Oscar nominations: one for the feline-musical short film Famous Fred (1996) and the other for The Wife of Bath (1998), an adaptation of Chaucer's famous Canterbury tale. In addition, his advertising work has left its mark on millions of Americans, unable to forget the endearing and scatological Charmin Bears.

Influenced by the work of animator Susan Young, her debut feature Girls Night Out (1987) won a triple award at Annecy and gave birth to Beryl: one of the most iconic and mutant characters in feminist animation and the protagonist of the short films Body Beautiful (1990), Dreams and Desires - Family Ties (2006) and her latest award-winning short film Affairs of the Art (2021). Co-produced with the NFB of Canada, it is her first digitally animated short film and a new installment of Beryl's story of her origins and her eccentric family. A choral and hyper-expressive exploration of artistic curiosity and obsession.
