Avishai Margalit
Philosopher, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
(Jerusalem, Israel, 1939). Avishai Margalit is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was previously Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University and taught at Harvard and Oxford Universities, amongst others. He is one of the most outstanding contemporary thinkers on the human condition, the moral foundations of our times, and the problems confronting western societies. His research concerns take in social and political philosophy, the philosophy of religion and culture, and the philosophical implications of social and cognitive psychology. He is also a highly regarded observer of the conflicts between Israel and Palestine and commentator on the relations between Islam and the West. He has written a considerable number of books including La sociedad decente (Paidós, 1997, reissued in 2010; published in English as The Decent Society, Harvard University Press, 1998), On Compromise and Rotten Compromises (Princeton, 2009), and more recently, On Betrayal (Harvard University Press, 2017, published in Catalan as De la traïció, Arcàdia, 2017). He has received a number of prizes and awards, including the Spinoza Lens Prize (2001) the Israel Prize for Philosophy (2010).
